For me, the appeal of radio is the time and place aspects that define the listeners experience. What you hear is directly related to where and when you are in the world. Combined with this element of chance is also a sense of ambiguity. You may or may not know, or even be able to track down what you heard at any given time.
The rise of music streaming, car infotainment systems, and media conglomerates have chipped away much of the mystery and novel discovery of new music. Its not all bad, the sheer amount of music and accessibility of discovering it is surely better than scanning the airwaves, only to recieve the same top-40, hit-machine-crafted rhythms offered by most terrestial radio stations.
Beyond your local FM frequency range, there is a wide world of audio waves buzzing around, waiting to be heard. Shortwave radio, CB, AM, Ham bands, frequencies reserved for emergency communications, airports, railways, satellites, and more still rely on over-the-air transmission to convey their messages.
